How Barometers Work (and What’s Involved in Barometer Repairs)

How Barometers Work (and What’s Involved in Barometer Repairs)

by Cameron Wilson – April 29, 2025 – 4 min read

Do you ever have that moment when you wish you knew what the weather was ACTUALLY going to do? You know, when you’re doing the washing line roulette thing before work... will it dry, or will you come home to washing wetter than when you hung it out?

Time & Trends is here to help. We’re proud to bring you the world-renowned Fischer barometers and tide clocks, which are both beautiful and functional. These precision German instruments measure atmospheric pressure—and stormy weather is usually linked with falling pressure.

Steps to Read a Barometer

  • Set the outer needle over the inner needle.

  • After a few hours, tap the glass gently. This sets the inner needle in place.

  • Observe the direction of the needle:

    • Right movement = higher pressure = fine weather

    • Left movement = falling pressure = bad weather

Having a home weather station like this means you'll see pressure changes before you see weather changes—a game changer for day-to-day life in New Zealand!

Featured Product: Fischer #6699-22 Traditional Weather Station

How to Set Up Your Barometer for Accuracy

For maximum sensitivity, your barometer must be adjusted to your elevation. Most models are set for sea-level use, but if you live at 2,000+ feet, adjustment is crucial. Using the adjustment screw on the back, you can fine-tune the pressure reading. Learn more in our barometer setup guide.

Keep in mind:
The higher the altitude, the lower the pressure, which can reduce accuracy if your barometer isn't properly set. For best results, find your device's mid-range and reposition the pointer needle carefully (only if you're confident—this may involve removing the face glass).
